The bedroom is one of those spaces that require warmth, personality, and tranquility more than any other place. It’s your private sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the world—a space for rest and relaxation. In other words, it’s the perfect place to create a cozy and personal atmosphere. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about choosing the best bedroom rug, from size and placement to the type of material.

Choosing the Right Size Rug for Your Bedroom

When it comes to bedroom rugs, the bigger, the better! One advantage of large rugs is that placing them under the bed can create a luxurious effect, as shown in the image below.

However, we have a few recommendations! Each space, furniture layout, and personal preference is different. But here are some general guidelines we like to follow regarding rug sizes for different bed sizes:

  • For a King Bed (180 cm by 200 cm): A rug of approximately 9 square meters.
  • For a Queen Bed (150 cm by 200 cm): A rug of approximately 7 square meters.
  • For a Full Bed (135 cm by 190 cm): A rug of approximately 5 square meters.
  • For a Twin Bed (90 cm by 190 cm): A rug of approximately 4 square meters.

Smaller rugs can also be practical. If you’re not a fan of large rugs, try one wide enough to extend about 50 cm from each side of your bed. Place it in the lower third of the bed so that it extends from the edge.

When in Doubt, Tape it Out!

Tape is your best friend when it comes to determining the right rug size for your space. Grab a roll of tape and mark the exact dimensions of the rug on the floor. This will help you visualize the size that will look best in your room.

Where to Place the Rug in the Bedroom?

Regardless of the rug size you choose, it’s best to follow these guidelines for placing it under the bed:

  • The long side of the rug should be parallel to the headboard. This will allow your beautiful rug to be displayed on both sides of the bed as much as possible!
  • Ensure the rug is centered under the bed unless your bed is flush with a wall on the left or right or the bedroom is so small that there’s not enough space to place the rug centrally.
  • Position the rug so it extends at least 50 cm from the edge of the bed.

Consider the placement of furniture legs, such as nightstands and chairs. Ensure that either all legs are on the rug or off the carpet to keep everything balanced.

Yes, you can layer rugs on top of each other. Many people carpet the entire floor in their bedroom as part of their decor. However, you can add a smaller rug under the bed after carpeting the bedroom wall-to-wall to give the room a distinctive touch. Just secure the rugs with rug tape to keep them in place.

Use a Rug Pad

All rugs need a rug pad, and the bedroom is no exception! Rug pads are essential for protecting both your floor and the carpet. They help to maintain the rug’s position, provide additional cushioning, and extend the life of your rug.

Best Materials and Designs for Bedroom Rugs

Since the bedroom has less foot traffic than other areas, almost any material and texture can be suitable for bedroom rugs.

The same goes for rug designs: nearly any design can be used! Just remember what parts of the rug might be covered by the bed. For example, rugs with central designs like medallions might have their main feature hidden depending on the size of the carpet and its placement under the bed.
